    GSUSA is looking for a highly motivated Business Intelligence (BI) Developer with Looker who thinks outside the box – and who is a bit outside the box, much like Looker itself. The ideal candidate has it all; software engineering skills, a broad familiarity with analytic methods and tools, experience with big data challenges. You will own all aspects of our Looker technology and make it work in our dynamic environment.

     

    Looker is a next generation business intelligence and analytics platform. Girl Scouts uses Looker as the technology of choice for data modeling, data abstraction along with visualization, dashboarding and reporting. At our national headquarters in NYC, GSUSA works in applying analytic techniques and other classification methodologies, preparing our rich data content for ad hoc and visual rendering technologies, available to then drive and enable decision making movement wide.

     

    As a BI engineer, you will be responsible for partnering with business and analytic teams to provide guidance and help in the implementation of analytics and reports. You will consult GSUSA and Council partners in creating and recommending best practices for data modeling and consumption through Looker.

    You will become familiar with the concepts of data sharing and working with partners in defining what data has value in being shared and consumed based on the myriad datasets used throughout the organization.

    You Will

    • Be the subject matter expert on Looker, both as a development platform and visualization tool
    • Be responsible for owning, developing, managing and maintaining the core Looker data models with specific goal of ensuring high-fidelity modeling
    • Build data expertise within the Girl Scout movement and drive adoption of products developed at HQ. Enable, educate and empower our partners to understand and access data as well as Looker data models efficiently with the goal of enabling self-service consumption
    • Develop Looker best practices in modeling and design and act as a consultant to Girl Scout clients on the use of the technology
    • Actively contribute to the Girl Scout vision of building and launching self-serve analytics products and support a self-service data exploration platform
    • Communicate and collaborate with cross functional teams at our nationwide Councils. Collect business requirements and help translating these into specifications and priorities. (English <---> SQL)
    • Anticipate customers’ analytic needs and proactively conceptualize and champion high-value data solutions
    • Hold office hours, organize training sessions, discussion events and more to evangelize Looker’s data modeling capabilities and best practices throughout the company
    • Be responsible for maintaining security and data access models through Looker
    • Own the release process for Looker code, work with the team to manage the Looker environment including software updates

    You Need

    • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills to assist all levels of customers in resolving issues over the phone, by email, and in-person skills.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related technical field or equivalent relevant work experience.
    • Proven ability to write, tune and execute SQL queries
    • 4+ years of professional work experience in an analytics-focused role
    • Experience as a hands-on BI Developer / Analyst working with self-service BI tools such as Looker, Tableau or Qlikview
    • Understanding of concepts such as dimensional data modeling, relational and column store databases
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while having a well-organized, self-starting working method
    • A customer-centric, professional attitude with strong interpersonal and communication skills at different levels with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely

     Ideal candidate would have

    • Proficiency and prior experience in Looker
    • Experience in creating data visualizations using JavaScript libraries such as D3
    • Experience with building interactive maps using TopoJSON or other custom shape files
    • Functional experience in a scripting language (e.g. Python or r)
    • Working knowledge of databases either MPP columnar such as Redshift, Snowflake, relational such as Postgres, in-memory such as MemSQL
    • Experience with AWS technologies and/or Snowflake
    • Interest in DevOps tasks like automating workflows, analyzing usage behaviors to proactively improve health of our services
